This Memorial Day weekend, we honor the sacrifices made by too many to ensure the freedoms that we enjoy. Penny Parrish returns this week to share her photos of the Luminaria. Now in its 28th year, the Luminaria is an annual event that features 15,300 candles. One for each soldier buried at Fredericksburg National Cemetery and also honors those who died serving America.
This year’s event is happening tonight, which explains our early run date for the Sunday edition. You can visit the event tonight between 8 and 11 p.m. (See here for more information.)

Only a Private Killed
(Excerpt - Read the full poem here.)
But we fight our country’s battles
And our hopes are not forlorn
Our death shall be a blessing
To “Millions yet unborn.”
To our children and their children
And as each grave is filled
We will but ask our Chief to say
“Only a private killed.”
